Japanese LearNING

Where Japanese teachers and students help each other

Lesson Summary - Oct. 31st, 2015, JBP-1/Lesson2

Hello/Konnichiwa,

Here's the recap of Lesson 2.

We've learned the followings in Lesson 2 of JBP-1.

1) How to count Japanese numbers from 0 to 9

You can find these numbers on page 10 in the textbook.
However, there are four numbers that have 2 different way of reading such as;

0 - ゼロ/れい (Zero/rei)
4 - よん/し (yon/shi)
7 - なな/しち (nana/shichi)
9 - きゅう/く (kyuu/ku)

In this lesson, we've learned how to read and tell phone numbers, and the underlined reading ways are used for phone numbers.

The main reason why these reading ways are used is to prevent miscommunication between similar sounds in reading since phone numbers are very sensitive information.

Ex. 1 & 7 : いち(ichi) & しち(shichi)
2 & 4 : に(ni) & し(shi)
6 & 9 : ろく(roku) & く(ku)

2) How to tell objects with the Noun Sentence.

これは「object」です(kore wa 「object」desu)。 This is 「object」.

Ex. これは けいたいです。 (kore wa keitai desu) This is a cell phone.

3) How to ask what an object is.

これは「object」ですか。(kore wa 「object」desu ka)。 Is this「object」?

Ex 1. Q : これは けいたいですか。(kore wa keitai desu ka) Is this an cell phone?
A 1 : はい、けいたいです。(hai, keitai desu) Yes, (it's) an cell phone.
A 2 : いいえ、けいたいでは ありません。 (iie, keitai dewa arimasen) No, it's not a cell phone.

Ex 2. Q : これは なんですか。 (kore wa nan desuka) What is this?
A : けいたいです。 (keitai desu) (This is) a cell phone.

4) Telling the ownership of things
5) Asking who something belongs to

Above subjects are explained in the link below:
